What did you guys think of the cash for clunkers program ?

My friend works in a Dealership, a Toyata at the time and now he works in the dodge/jeep next door. When the cash for clunkers was going on he was in the toyata dealership and you would not belive how many Jeeps mainly Grand Cherokee's were traded.

The whole parking lot was full of them, and i dunno it made me cry and angry at the same time because the all the engines were going to be destroyed and the cars scraped. No parts or anything.. I went there and got some minor parts for my own 98 but still..

Can you guys imagine for a sec see'ing a parking lot filled with Jeeps that had there engines solidified and were bound to be crushed ? Such a waste, those cars if in good running order should have been donated to people who need a vehicle..

I worked for dodge, along with 4 friends, and yes Grand Cherokees, zj mostly, where the main thing. It killed me having to blow them up, most put up a fight. But we did part some of them out when the bosses weren't around.

it helped out alot of people who really needed it but alot of people who wernt in need took advantage of it. and i agree they should have done something different with the cars. imagine if they did this along time ago melting down a bunch of junk. now that junk is considered awesome classic cars from a long time ago. well 2009 one day will be a long time ago.

and i agree seeing all the sweet 80's and 90's cars in a lot knowing their future made me sick. i wanted to steel them.. well... (save them) haha

The title of this thread is: "What did you guys think of the cash for clunkers program?" You asked so I'm responding to the original question... how many Jeeps or cool cars in the lot is not the issue.

My answer to the question... It's nothing but BULL SHIT as are ALL other bail outs using my hard earned money by giving it to someone else to spend!!!

Since when does my tax money have to go to buy some other person a car?? It's nothing but a program that took $$$ from you and me and gave it to someone else. Now the latest Govt give away using you're hard earned money is "Cash for Appliances". When will all this BS end?? Greed and over spending is what got us into the current economic situation. Let business and people that took on more dept than they can afford fend for themselves. Let the economy and housing market fix itself. The Govt has no business doing what's it's doing, controlling banks and industries... it's called SOCIALISM.

BTW... I'm off to get my taxes done in 2 hours. Think I'm pissed now... what until I find out how much I owe and think where MY money is going to be spent.

Any body that believes in these dumb ass programs needs to wake up and realize what's going on. The first place to look is at your pay stub and see what you're paying in taxes, then look at state, city and other sales taxes you're paying!!

What has the government done right??? Check this out....

The bleeding heart liberals want to give everybody everything at the expense of the working middle class which is shrinking on a daily basis. The cash cow is running out of milk.

Social Security was established in 1935. You have had 74 years to get it right and it is BROKE.

The U.S. Post Service was established in 1775.You have had 234 years to get it right and it is BROKE

Medicare and Medicaid were established in 1965. You have had 44 years to get it right and they are BROKE etc.,etc.,etc.

We don't have to run like a third world country JUST STOP WASTEFULL SPENDING!! Our politicians are stupid arrogant and force policies and programs down our throats that we don't want or need.

Well said ..Couldn't agree more.. People need to learn to live within their means...But then again Washington D.C. doesn't know what that means. Print more money it will be worthless before long!!

AJ, you hit it right on the head. These cars were paid off, so instead of people taking care of their debt, the get more. I don't get how that helped. It did help the auto industry a little bit, but didn't help at all with the debt issue. :nono:

The benefit to the car companies was short lived and fueled by our tax $$$ so a few could get a new car in hopes it would help the economy. How stupid are the people that run our country to think that a short sighted temp solution, funded by our tax dollars to benefit a few, could begin to turn the economy around?? Can those people in charge really be that stupid???

I'm not trying to be mean, heartless or a hater... I'm just being responsible for myself. These companies and people that have taken on too much should sink or swim on their own. I'm supposed to feel sorry for all the housing speculators or people who bought more house they could afford going with an ARM loan rather than with a traditional mortgages?? I blame the people who took out the loans, the banks for giving money to people who couldn't afford it, and the government for backing up a lot of those loans and all their social programs to support this fiasco.

I'm not a rich person by any means... just struggling to stay in the lower rungs of middle class. I paid my tax bill yesterday. While I've never been happy to turn over my money to the govt to support wasteful and social programs, yesterday was the turning point for both my wife and myself. It made us both sick having to write a rather large check to pay our taxes knowing how the govt is misusing our money. It's sad to say... if we knew of a place we could move to to get away from all the socialist BS going on around us, we'd move in a heartbeat. We are both tired of have to take care of other people who will not be responsible for themselves.

Again... I'm off my soap box, but I'm sick AND disgusted how things are going all around me. At my age I can see the finish line off in the distance. Good luck to all the younger folks that are really going to have to pay the price for all of their president's promised "change".

This says it all. Bunch of horseshit. Takes good, running vehicles off the road and increases debt. And for the environment? I'm certain that producing a car creates more pollution than the 10MPG difference will make up for.
