Welcome! Advise on the XJ. Try to find a 4 door model. Since the XJ is unibody, the 4 doors are a lot more rigid than the 2 doors. Stay away from 84-86's. 87-90 were slightly better (horrible Renix injection, weak Peugeot manual trannies),. 91-95's are good except for the Low Pinion front Diff, they also changed over to a Chrysler 8.25 rear end which is stronger than the previous Dana 35's. In 96 they went to a high pinion dana 30 which is stronger, in 96 they upgraded to a stronger u Joint also. 97's saw an increase to 29 spline shafts in the 8.25. 99 was the last year for the HP front end before they went back to LP's. and the the ended the XJ in 01 replaced by the KJ in 02.

So if you can... 97-99 4 door XJ is the best, followed by a 96, or 00-01's.

get out of here.:flipthebird:

j/k. welcome adam. an XJ is an excellent choice for a trail rig.

jsut so you know, not all 91+ have the 8.25 rear. it was only available on non ABS equipped models, and even then not all had them, some still had the weaker D35.

and i am relatively sure only 00-01 XJ's have a Low pinion front diff, all others from 84-99 all had High Pinion front diffs.

but the 4.0 HO (91+) is much better than the renix 4.0 in my 1990. and one with an np231 (part time) t- case is better than the 242 (full time) t-case.

Your right, I was thinking Vacuum disconnects on the older models, typed Low pinion. Sorry, mind works faster than the fingers. I also forgot about the ABS option which meant you did get the turdy five.
